London Underground has started the hunt for specialist trade contractors to deliver a big shake up in how it delivers its station works improvement programme.
The business is aiming to work directly with Tier 3 and Tier 4 contractors on the Tube station upgrade to improve innovation, quality and delivery times.
Under the plan London Underground’s in-house SWIP team will act as the principal contractor employing subcontractors directly.
The new ‘Stake delivery model’ is being used to give specialists greater freedom to value engineer and innovate freely.
Tube bosses have already named the 20 subcontractors and three consultants they will use and are now looking to sign up an army of specialist trade contractors
The new programme of works will run for five years with work under the new arrangement starting in the first half of next year.
London Underground believes the new approach will sustain quality and productivity but reduce costs and potentially improve time scales of works.
It aims to cut costs by 25% working directly with the trade contractors using the consultants to oversee work on the 70-station improvement programme.
London Underground procurement chiefs are looking for specialist to bid for nine distinct lots, each split into three value bands of up to £200,000, £200,000-£2m and projects bigger than £2m.
